Letang’s OT winner lifts Penguins by Rangers 3-2

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 04:57:54 GMT

Kris Letang knows the Pittsburgh Penguins have the NHL’s oldest team. The 35-year-old defenseman is one of the reasons why.The Penguins have never missed the playoffs during Letang’s 17-year career. They know what it takes to get there, even if this time around it may have taken a little longer than usual for that postseason push to begin. It’s well underway now, and Letang is right in the middle of it.Letang’s blast from the point 1:38 into overtime lifted Pittsburgh to a 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers on Sunday, strengthening his team’s grasp on the first wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. Not bad for a team that looked lost after getting blown out at home by Edmonton on Feb. 23. The Penguins are 7-1-1 since.“I think if you look at our age average, a lot of guys have the experience and they know what to do to turn it on and make sure we get in the postseason and we start getting confident,” Letang said after his third overtime winner of th...

Padres’ Melvin ponders 6-man rotation, opening day starter

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 04:57:54 GMT

The San Diego Padres are flirting with the idea of beginning the season with a six-man pitching rotation.Settling on an opening day starter, though, may not be as easy a decision for manager Bob Melvin. With Joe Musgrove sidelined by a toe injury and Yu Darvish pitching for Japan in the World Baseball Classic, Melvin is exploring options that could include Blake Snell or Michael Wacha.Musgrove, who’s on the mend after dropping a weight on his left big toe, is set to throw a bullpen session Monday. And while he has made progress in his recovery since having the nail taken off the toe, there’s no guarantee he’ll ready for the March 30 opener against the Colorado Rockies. If Musgrove doesn’t suffer a setback, though, there’s a chance he could be inserted at the rear of the proposed six-man rotation the Padres are considering because they are scheduled to begin the season with a stretch of 24 games in 25 days.“It is pretty amazing to me, but since he got the nail taken off the pain has sub...

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jimmy Kimmel promised “no nonsense” at the 95th Academy Awards on Sunday as Hollywood reconvened for a ceremony that will try to move past one of the most infamous moments in Oscar history. In one of the night's first awards, former child star Ke Huy Quan capped his extraordinary comeback with the Oscar for best supporting actor. Quan, beloved for his roles as Short Round in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and Data in “Goonies,” had all but given up acting before being cast in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”His win, among the most expected of the night, was nevertheless one of the ceremony's most moving moments. The audience — including his “Temple of Doom” director, Steven Spielberg — gave Quan a standing ovation as he fought back tears. “Mom, I just won an Oscar!” said Quan, 51, whose family fled Vietnam in the war when he was a child. “They say stories like this only happen in the movies. I can't believe it's happening,” said Quan. "This is the Amer...

Xaverian boys win in OT to make final

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 04:57:54 GMT

LOWELL – It’s only a matter of time until Xaverian senior Joe DiMartino changes his legal name to “Playoff Joe.”After a whole night of hearing his name chanted by a large student section at the Tsongas Center, DiMartino fulfilled their pleas Sunday night by sending the Hawks to TD Garden for a second straight year. His goal with 4:47 left in overtime stood as the only score in the No. 7 Hawks’ 1-0 win over No. 14 Reading in the second Div. 1 state semifinal of the day, ending a defensive marathon that featured two of the tournament’s most dialed-in goaltenders.Cole Pouliot-Porter (25 saves) and the Xaverian defense were able to hold on just a little longer than Chris Hanifan (21 saves) and the Rockets, and now have a date with No. 4 Pope Francis in the final next Sunday to try to avenge its loss last year.“You guys know ‘Playoff Joe,’ right,” said Xaverian head coach Dave Spinale. “Every year since we won the conference two years ago when he was a sophomore, he’s always scored the b...

US-S Korea drills begin after N Korea submarine missile test

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 04:57:54 GMT

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The South Korean and U.S. militaries launched their biggest joint military exercises in years Monday, as North Korea said it conducted submarine-launched cruise missile tests in apparent protest of the drills it views as an invasion rehearsal. North Korea’s missile tests Sunday signal the country likely will conduct provocative weapons testing activities during the U.S.-South Korean drills that are to run for 11 days. Last week, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ordered his troops to be ready to repel its rivals’ “frantic war preparation moves.”The South Korean-U.S. drills include a computer simulation called the Freedom Shield 23 and several combined field training exercises, collectively known as the Warrior Shield FTX.South Korean and U.S. authorities didn’t immediately disclose details of Monday’s drills. But they said earlier the computer simulation is designed to strengthen the allies’ defense and response capabilities amid North Korea...

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The war movie that abhors war has won an Oscar for best international film.“All Quiet on the Western Front,” starring Felix Kammerer and directed and co-written by Edward Berger, earned nine nominations, including best picture. The Netflix film is based on the classic 1929 novel of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque. Set during World War I, it follows the life of a young German soldier who enlists in the army with his friends. But the realities of war shatter his hopes of becoming a hero and he focuses on his own survival. However, the German-language film doesn’t hew exactly to Remarque’s novel. Instead, it deviates into political issues against the backdrop of the war. It premiered last year, when Russia invaded Ukraine in the biggest military conflict in Europe since World War II, lending an unexpected relevancy to the movie.“All Quiet on the Western Front” won seven BAFTA trophies, including best film. The original American movie starring Lew Ayr...
