By WAFAA SHURAFA and KAREEM CHEHAYEB (Associated Press)DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — A four-day cease-fire in Gaza between Israel and Hamas will began Friday morning, Qatar said, a day later than originally announced, as negotiators worked out final details of the deal, which is to lead to the release of dozens of hostages held by militants and Palestinians imprisoned by Israel. The diplomatic breakthrough promised some relief for the 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza who have endured weeks of Israeli bombardment, as well as families in Israel fearful for the fate of their loved ones taken captive during Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack that triggered the war.The deal appeared to hit a last-minute snag when Israel’s national security adviser, Tzachi Hanegbi, announced a one-day delay late Wednesday, without providing a reason. The cease-fire was originally set to begin Thursday morning. On Thursday, Majed al-Ansari, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry of Qatar, which played a key role in media...

Larry Magid: Using ChatGPT for holiday gift ideas and cards

This is the week when I typically write a column about how to shop for holiday gifts. I wrote previous holiday gift columns based on my personal experiences and a bit of online searching. This year, I’m getting a little help from ChatGPT, which is able to recommend gifts, create holiday cards and help you decide what products to buy.Related ArticlesBusiness | Larry Magid: Survey sheds light on parent, teen feelings about Generative AI Business | Magid: White House order provides guidance on AI safety Business | Magid: Beware of ‘smishing’ scams Business | Magid: Smartphone essentials for traveling abroad Purchase recommendationMy first use of ChatGPT to recommend a purchase was a Thanksgiving present for myself and my wife. San Jose State-UNLV is a premier matchup of turnaround stories

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 04:10:04 GMT

SAN JOSE — San Jose State’s turnaround from a 1-5 start to contention for a berth in the Mountain West championship game is surprising, but perhaps even more unexpected is the team that stands in the way of the Spartans’ conference championship hopes.First-year coach Barry Odom has taken UNLV (9-2, 6-1 Mountain West) to its first nine-win season since 1984 and can put the Rebels in the conference title game with a home win on Saturday against the Spartans (12 p.m., Mountain West Network). It’s an unexpected accomplishment for a team that was picked to finish ninth in the Mountain West preseason poll.Don’t count SJSU coach Brent Brennan among those surprised, though.“They’ve done a really good job putting the right pieces of the puzzle together,” Brennan said. “When you watch them play, you can tell that they’re well coached and they’re doing all the right things.”Odom’s tenure at UNLV didn’t have the best start. When he was hired last ...

BERLIN (AP) — Marie-Louise Eta is set to become the first female assistant coach in the 60-year history of the Bundesliga when Union Berlin plays on Saturday.Union appointed Eta as assistant to interim coach Marco Grote following its dismissal of the popular Urs Fischer during the international break.Fischer led the team to unprecedented success over 5½ years, but Union is last this season after nine consecutive defeats. Grote and Eta were promoted from Union’s Under-19 team, which was third in both its domestic league and UEFA Youth League competitions before the senior team came calling. Their first game in charge is the home match against Augsburg, which is unbeaten in four games.Despite the fact Eta will be the first female member of a coaching staff in the league since the Bundesliga was formed in 1963, Union, as a club, only wants to focus on its precarious sporting situation.“It’s not a conscious decision for a woman. I think that almost discredits this decision,” Union presi...
